Equipping several large armies at once required skilled planning and access to huge amounts of iron, copper and a metal industry with highly trained engineers and smiths. Their job was to produce all personal equipment and weapons for hundreds of thousands of infantry soldiers, officers and their horses and carriages, as well as to design and build all the vessels needed for the navy. Most of the products were distributed to far-off places.
